What exactly goes into “musicianship” and can it be measured against sports?
A few thoughts… 1) Musicians are really just a big team; we work together to achieve more than any one of us can individually.
2) Music is an acquired skill that takes hours of practice to perfect.
3) Over the course of many years, many people find that the pursuit of excellence is worth the hours and years of effort. So the question begs answering, can these same ideas be applied to sports? I think the answer is YES! That being said, (insert semi-biased opinion) music is as important as sports for many reasons.
Now, personal opinions aside, some people are naturally inclined to be drawn to one or the other, but it is possible, and should be ok, to be a supporter of both! As Interim Superintendent Debbie Siebert spoke to the FCS faculty at the start of the school year, “Together We Achieve More” (TEAM).
Is it worth tearing sports down to raise the profile of the arts? Does that really accomplish anything substantive? Or…does it just fracture our supporters one way or the other? Can we, and should we, alter our state of mind about the two disciplines and agree that we share an equal playing field? If so, we can all learn to appreciate that which makes us unique and special! We’re all part of the same TEAM and as the Instrumental Music teacher, I am going to go on record by saying today that sports are important! Arts are too!
Let’s all learn to support one another and be happy when a member of our TEAM causes us immense pride (i.e. Girl’s BB team, Harry McComb, Madison Dooley in “Alice”, etc!). We have much to be proud of? How about we look for those special things wherever they may appear and congratulate those we’re so proud to be surrounded by!
